Prólogo

This second volume deals with the schizopsychotíc disorders, the movement dísorders and the disorders, particularly cognitive, relating to the ageing process. Tragically, in the period from the conception of our meeting to the meeting itself, in Madrid, the lives of Nils-Erik Andén and Richard Heikkela ceased. Arvid Carlsson, long a guiding spirit for the organizers, became ill and could not attend, Jórgen Engel lost his father which precluded his attending and Ernest Hárd had a by-pass operation. When Lew Seiden, the President of our meeting, was diagnosed for severe hypertension some weeks before the meeting one was beginning to feel that the Gods were not pleased with us. Happily, however, as events were soon to reveal there was every indication that those same Gods still loved us, and, we still had the heavy brigade: Brenda Costall and Sven Abienius; Tommy Lewander and Richard Meibach; lrwin Kopin and Gaetano di Chíara; Trevor Robbins and finally Jim McGaugh (as it turned out Jim had to attend the National Academy of Sciences), Vicky Chan-Palay and Juan José López-Ibor. Naturally, each of these combinations organized and directed their respective symposia. Others weighed in too: George Koob directed "Reward and Drug Abuse"; Roger Russell "Methods for Studying Memory"; Sven Ove Ogren “Atypical neuroleptics"; and, Michael Emmett-Oglesby "Animal Models of Drug Withdrawal Symptoms". A couple of other people were conspicuous by their infectious psychological and moral supportiveness: Iván Izquierdo and Erich Lehr. Well, the list of active helpers is long but that was because this meeting turned out to be something of a social phenomenon. We never expected the meeting so spontaneously, to develop such affectionate goodwill as it did, within the scientific participation. A good-fellowship unhampered by such minor mishaps as: the nonarrival of buses for day-outing excursions, "Madrid-by-night", the wrongly-addressed gala dinner sporting senescent flamenco dancers or the over-hanging threat of imminent expulsion from hotel rooms. Among the ebb and tide of short-lived triumphs and untidy administratorial recriminations drifted the languid figure or Roger Farrand, surreptitiously watching over his dangerous investment. Naturally, for all the participants the sunshine smiles of Richard Muscat and one of us, Ken. Hodson, were enough to counter any calamity. Not to be bested by anyone, the eventual arrival of Vicky Chan-Palay was monumental and quite unforgettable; which is of course the lasting memory of Madrid - Monumental and Unforgettable.
